Gugga Naumi is a festival celebrated in Haryana and Punjab to commemorate snake-worship. It generally falls between January to September and held in honor of Gugga Pir. A number of legends are woven around Gugga Pir or Zahir Pir (the saint). Gugga Pir is also referred to as Baggar wala because of his grave near Dadrewa near Ganga nagar. It is believed that he the power of curing people of snake-bite. The shrine is distinguished by its square shape with minarets and domed roof. It is called 'Mari'. The devotees, on this day, paint the image of Gugga Pir on the wall in turmeric. They also paint the image of snakes in black color. Milk and butter milk are poured into the holes of the snake. The special sweet dish of sevian is prepared during this festival. On this occasion, devotional songs known as 'Pir Kesolle' are sung in accompaniment to deru, a musical instrument.
