Kite lovers in for a treat on Makar Sankranti
11/01/2013
PATNA: Kite lovers in the city are in for a treat as Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) is to organize a three-day kite and aero-modelling fiesta in the Sabbalpur Diara area from January 14 to 16, to mark the festival of Makar Sankranti which is celebrated on January 14.

The festival, now in its second edition, would see expert kite-flyers from Gujarat and three connoisseurs from abroad who would compete in the kite-flying competition being organized by the BSTDC. "Local people can also take part in the competition for which we have planned to distribute free kites to visitors at the venue," said Navin Kumar, deputy general manager (DGM), BSTDC.

The BSTDC has also advertised the event in other states. "The response to the festival last year was very good. The 14-km long Ganga beach in the diara is very beautiful and we want to make it a tourist destination for people from other states, too," Kumar said, adding, "We want people to know that kite-flying is popular here, too, and not just in the western states of India."

Colourful kites would compete on the banks of the Ganges to win the sky. Chief minister Nitish Kumar is expected to inaugurate the festival and invitations have also been sent out to other ministers and bureaucrats. "The carnival is expected to have a large number of footfalls this year as well," the DGM said.

Technology lovers would witness a visual delight with a state of the art 'Aero-modelling show' being organized on the third day of the event. "We have roped in a city-based firm to organize the show. However, the BSTDC would borne the total cost. The show would demonstrate pilotless aircraft controlled by remote that would fly in 1.5km radius," said Kumar.

Shailendra Kumar Mishra, the owner of a city-based firm and flyer of the model aircraft, said, "We would put up a show of 2-3 low-wing aircraft. Each of them would be flown for about 15-20 minutes. The aircraft would land for refuelling and fly at about 100 kmph in any direction."

The firm has been organizing such shows throughout the country for many years now.
